In a keynote address at the Bank of Mexico, Mr. Alexandre Tombini, BIS Chief Representative for the Americas, highlighted the vital role central banks play not only in shaping monetary policy, but also in ensuring the development and stability of payment systems. While payments often receive less public attention than monetary policy or financial regulation, they are fundamental to maintaining a trustworthy, reliable, and accessible financial system. The presentation offered an overview of achievements in payment systems across the Americas, and outlined the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.
