This document presents the Basic Principles for the Design of a SupTech Roadmap, developed to serve as a reference for banking supervisory authorities in the development and implementation of SupTech strategies tailored to their institutional contexts. In an environment of increasing financial system complexity and rapid technological innovation—particularly in areas such as artificial intelligence and data science—SupTech has become a key element in strengthening the effectiveness, efficiency, and quality of banking supervision.
The document identifies seven core principles to guide an effective SupTech roadmap: sound governance; integration of supervisors and data throughout the lifecycle of tools; the establishment of multidisciplinary teams; the creation of internal networks of supervisors interested in SupTech; the development and successful deployment of tools; training programs in data science and artificial intelligence; and the promotion of international cooperation. These principles aim to ensure that SupTech initiatives generate tangible value for supervisory functions and are sustainably embedded in institutional processes.
The document also highlights a set of key preconditions for the successful implementation of these principles, including active commitment from senior management, robust data governance and strategy, and the clear definition of a SupTech vision and strategy aligned with supervisory objectives. It emphasizes that SupTech roadmaps should be conceived as dynamic instruments over the short to medium term, capable of adapting to rapid technological advances and supporting a process of continuous improvement.
Taken together, these guidelines provide a practical and flexible framework for ASBA member supervisory authorities to progress in a gradual and sustainable manner in the use of SupTech, adapting technological solutions to their capabilities, priorities, and institutional contexts.
